Last week, the Lakeland Board of Commissioners (BOC) unanimously backed a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Michele Dial. The resolution aims to assist Mayor Josh Roman in developing strategies and advocating for necessary legislative changes to eliminate cashless bonds and strengthen consequences for repeat offenders, including juveniles. The resolution is part of a proactive effort by the Mayor and BOC to increase public safety in Lakeland.

Shelby County has experienced a rise in criminal activity, with over 3,000 vehicles stolen so far in 2023, primarily by juveniles. The BOC has considered strategies to prompt county, state, and federal officials to take proactive measures in response to this issue. Lakeland currently relies on the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) for law enforcement, as the city does not have its own police department.

A new SCSO office is being pursued for Lakeland near the Canada and I-40 exit. Vice-Mayor Wesley Wright is assisting with the design of the complex, which aims to provide better law enforcement coverage in the area. Elected officials throughout the county have voiced their concerns about the situation, and it is now a matter of taking action.

The BOC also expressed support for Shelby County Commissioner Mick Wright, who is working with others to ensure that the SCSO receives ample support and resources to address the ongoing crime problem.
